Paradox Management in Practice

A Look Back at the 10th SWF Forum in Berlin

Last week, the 10th SWF – Simon Weber Friends Forum took place at bUm in Berlin under the motto “Paradox Management in Practice.”

Paradoxes: A Challenge for Logical Thinking

Paradoxes pose a problem for our logical thinking! The imperative “Be spontaneous!” is an unsolvable dilemma for us. Similarly, the (bitter) realization that planning constricts the future, making it more complex rather than simpler, is equally perplexing. Paradoxes force us to oscillate between contradictions and push those involved to the limits of their ability to act.

Paradoxes as Valuable Tools in Organizational Consulting

Despite these challenges, paradoxes hold great value in organizational consulting. They help identify contradictions and their functions or dysfunctions, allowing us to reframe them and use them positively. By recognizing patterns and developing action options from them, organizations can become more effective and resilient.

A High-Quality Agenda

The SWF team has once again put together an outstanding program. Prof. Dr. Elena Esposito examined paradoxes from a sociological perspective, highlighting their potential as a resource. Prof. Dr. Detlef Pollack made connections to religious paradoxes, revealing astonishing parallels to beliefs within companies. Prof. Dr. med. Fritz B. Simon reflected on their impact in psychological and social systems, providing practical insights relevant to the everyday operations of businesses and organizations.

Practical Case Studies

A particular highlight of the forum was the work on concrete cases presented by four case providers from different sectors: family businesses, corporations, automotive, and SMEs. Through group work, these cases were intensely analyzed, leading to a deep understanding and valuable insights. The direct exchange with clients and the shared experience at this high level fostered first-class discussions and new perspectives.

Paradox Management as a Valuable Competence in Organizational Consulting

The 10th SWF Forum clearly demonstrated how valuable the management of paradoxes can be in practice. By recognizing and utilizing contradictions, organizations can not only expand their ability to act but also develop innovative solutions.
